Educational Program

Verdun Elementary School’s educational goals are achieved through:

  • a full-day Pre-k (4 year old) program
  • a Bilingual ( 50% English and 50% French) Program from Kindergarten to Cycle 3 Year 2
  • an enriched music program with a Junior and Senior Band
  • a focus on literacy with support starting in Pre-K for students with specific learning needs
  • a balanced literacy program at all levels incorporating the best practices of science of reading
  • collaborative projects with various community partners
  • a partnership with the CSSS of Verdun that caters to the needs of the whole child.  This partnership provides us with the services of a school nurse, a dental hygienist and a school social worker.

Music Program

Verdun Elementary School offers a comprehensive music program to students in all grades, both within school hours and through extensive extra-curricular activities.

In class activities include:

  • African drumming circles
  • Music literacy games
  • Keyboard / Piano
  • Recorder
  • Dance
  • Concert Band Program (Grade 5 & 6)
  • Appreciating music from various times and places

Verdun Elementary has an additional lunchtime and after school band program for students in Grades 5 and 6. These bands offer unique enrichment opportunities for students who demonstrate great dedication, teamwork, and enthusiasm in the music program. The choice of instruments includes alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, flute, and clarinet. Students graduate the band program with a greater sense of commitment, camaraderie with their fellow musicians, self-esteem, and, of course, the ability to play their instruments and read musical notation more skillfully.

Throughout the year, VES students have the opportunity to showcase their musical learning through various special events:

  • Winter Concert (Cycle 3)
  • Spring Concert (Cycle 1 & 2)
  • Band Exchange with the students of St. Edmund Elementary
  • Open House

Physical Education

The objective of the physical education program at Verdun Elementary is to MOVE and discover a variety of physical activities that will promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

As physical activity is extremely important to a person’s well being we at Verdun Elementary place the utmost importance on developing autonomous and responsible learners who are able to take charge of their own learning in a physical education setting.  

Through a variety of different physical activities such as:

Our goal is for our students to develop sportsmanship and camaraderie inside and outside of the classroom. We place an emphasis on different offensive and defensive strategies that can be utilized in different sports settings outside of the school.
